Meet support coordinator Jane

Jane couldn’t see herself doing anything else but work in the care sector. Read more about how she got into the industry and what opportunities the care sector brings.

What does your typical day look like?

“I start my day by checking the co-ordinators log book and then attend our handover, once complete, I start the medication round and have a good chat with all the residents. Once medication is out of the way, I’ll then go on to dressing the residents, asking what they want for lunch, and arranging transport to go out for the day services. I’ll spend some time in the office, filling in bed book/medication audits, speaking with GPs and social workers and pre-admissions for example. Every day is different!”

What got you into working in the care sector?

“My nana worked as a nursing auxiliary and I wanted to follow in her footsteps, which is what got me into the industry!

“I first started working in the industry at 17. My first job was really rewarding, I worked with adults with learning disabilities. I loved taking them on holiday and helping them live more fulfilling lives.”

What do you love about your job role?

“It’s such a rewarding job, I love seeing someone improve, for example, if a resident’s speech isn’t good and then it improves, it’s the daily interaction that helps them thrive.”

What are the tough sides to the job?

“I think one of the biggest challenges in the job is that staffing levels can be difficult. Care work really isn’t for everyone and it’s important that you’re the right type of person for the industry. We all look after our residents, how we would look after one of our family members.”

What would you say to others who are looking to join the industry, and what are the career progression opportunities?

“Do it! It can be hard work, but it is the most rewarding job. There is so much career progression and a wide range of opportunities based in different care sectors. There are training courses available to upskill constantly, with online training also available.”

What do you enjoy most about working for Jervaulx?

“Jervaulx is such a happy environment, it feels homely, where residents come first. I enjoy making phone calls with families and bonding with the families that we care for. I also love overseeing the respite house; it’s fast-paced, but I like the changeover and the challenges it brings.
