Lisa has been working in care since 2016, bringing almost 9 years of dedication and compassion to the role. For the past three years, she has enjoyed working at Olam, where she has grown in her career and been promoted to mentor.
What does your typical day look like?
“My day usually starts at 7 am when I see my first client. I follow the rota for the week, supporting clients with personal care, administering medication and helping with meal preparation. I also mentor new carer workers, guiding them through induction and shadowing. Part of my role includes carrying out spot checks too. It’s a lot of responsibility, but I’ve always been a hardworking person and I enjoy the challenge.”
How did you start your career in care?
“My passion for care began when I was a student nurse in Zimbabwe. I realised then how much I loved supporting people and that has stayed with me ever since.”
What do you love about your job role?
“It’s a very fulfilling job. I love knowing that I’ve helped someone live their life more independently. Seeing a client’s smile at the end of the day really makes it all worth it.”
What would you say to others who are looking to join the industry?
“I would tell them to go for it! It’s such a rewarding profession. It does require someone willing to put themselves out there and truly work with their heart, but it’s worth it.”
What is your favourite moment?
“One of my favourite moments was with a client who had never had carers before. It was very challenging at first, because she wasn’t used to anyone supporting her. It took a lot of patience and relationship-building, but now she feels very settled. I even take her on trips to Whitby; she has grown so much in independence. That transformation has been incredible to witness.”
What are the tough sides to the job?
“Every day is different which can be challenging. Our clients have very different needs and require a lot of patience to adapt to each situation. But with time, understanding and care, you learn how to make a real difference.”
What do you enjoy most about working for Olam?
“Olam has been so supportive with my career progression. I’ve received lots of training, completed my NVQ Level 3 and as a mentor I’ve been able to help others grow too. It really feels like a place where you can build a future.”
