43 year old Emma from Redcar has been in the care industry for over 20 years and for the last five years, she has been a recruitment and senior carer at Meadowvale Homecare.
What do you love about your job role?
“I love meeting new people, listening to their stories, and making a difference in the lives of people who don’t have a lot of family or friends.”
What are the tough sides to the job?
“The tough sides of the job are getting attached to people and losing them, over time you build bonds, and you have to put that to the side and get on with your job, it’s difficult.”
What would you say to others that are looking to join the industry?
“If you’ve got a caring side then it’s not the job for you. You can’t do it for money, it’s not just a job and it can be hard to shut off.”
What does your typical day look like?
“I’m in the office predominately and try different ways of recruiting people to work for us, explaining what the job role is and interviewing candidates. It can be difficult recruiting when people don’t turn up for interviews, but then on the flip side, we get so many people come through that make great care workers. On a weekend I’m on call and provide care to clients across Redcar and Cleveland.”
What’s your favourite part of being a care worker?
“I love when people warm to you and they don’t want you to leave, they’re grateful for your time and appreciate everything you do for them.
“I’m a caring person and treat people how I want my family to be treated.”
Is there career progression in the sector?
“There is so much career progression in the sector, it depends on the person and what they want to do with their career. Whilst at Meadowvale I’ve got my Level 3 and I’m looking at completing my Level 4, I’ve also finished an end of life course. There’s always options to build on your skills within the sector.”
