Meet care worker Leigha Heaton

17 year old Leigha, from Dormanstown in Redcar, recently entered the care industry and continues to gain experience to further her career.

Why did you choose the care industry?

“I went to one of Meadowvale Homecare’s coffee mornings and fun days with my Mam and sat with a client, the client got talking to me and we got on really well, and while I was there a manager at Meadowvale asked if I’d thought about joining the industry. I was in college studying health and social care at the time and I thought it would be a great opportunity to gain experience while at college.”

What does your typical day look like?

“My typical day includes seeing a lot of different people, I generally start early and finish late.”

How do you find working on your own?

“I was unsure about working on my own at first, but now I prefer working on my own, at my own speed etc.”

What do you love about your job role?

“I love meeting new people and making a difference to someone’s life, it’s nice to see them smile and in my job, I’ve gained so many more grandparents!”

What are the tough sides to the job?

“It’s hard seeing people ill and not being able to help them, I’d say that is the toughest side to the role.”

What was your perception of the industry before you joined it, and what’s your perception now?

“I was nervous at first, I thought it was all personal care and found it daunting, but now I’ve seen it’s actually so much more and enjoy it.”

What would you say to others that are looking to join the industry?

“We have such a good team around us, the office staff and team are lovely, and the clients are amazing. I’ve worked with the office staff to introduce ‘Make a Wish’, where each client tells us a wish and we try our best to fulfil it, it’s been such a great experience so far.”

What are your career aspirations, is there progression in the industry?

“People think it’s a dead-end job, but it opens a lot of doors. I started this job while working around college, but I enjoyed my job so much more than college and I decided the course wasn’t for me, so I decided to go full-time at Meadowvale Homecare.

“I’ve gained so much experience and it has created a pathway into various careers for me. I’m looking at going back to college to potentially become a midwife. It has been a nice career to start in and a starting point for progressing further, and a job that I can still carry on whilst studying. “

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

“The most rewarding part of my job is watching clients come on so far and seeing them smile. And being that one interaction, they’ll get in a few hours, or days.”
