Meet deputy manager Tracy

Deputy manager of Jervaulx, Tracy, has worked in the care sector for the majority of her adult life and has worked her way to deputy manager. She loves the daily challenges the role brings and meeting new clients and families.

What does your typical day look like?

“There isn’t a typical day, it’s impossible to get bored and you never know what’s going to pop up. I get to meet people from every walk of life, and I love the daily challenges the role brings.

“Typically, my role is 90% office-based but I make time to walk around the home during the day. I check health and safety on a daily basis, and we have a lot of audits taking place. We now have a new digital care system and it has made such a difference to care records, they’re more legible, and the team can clearly see if jobs are missed. I also do initial assessments, and visit the person’s home, for both permanent or respite care. A part of my role is to take time to interact with schools, colleges and day services too.”

What got you into working in the care sector?

“I’ve always worked in Redcar & Cleveland for 27 years. I’ve worked in day services and other residential services, in various job roles such as care assistant and activities assistant. I fell into care but I wouldn’t change it for the world!”

What do you love about your job role?

“I love the support that’s around me, it helps me deliver the best support to my colleagues and residents. I love everything about my job!”

What are the tough sides to the job?

“Budget restraints and staffing difficulties are a tough side of the job. Care isn’t seen as a profession, it is seen as a calling, it’s not seen the same way as the nursing profession, but we provide a similar type of care.”

What would you say to others who are looking to join the industry?

“If you want to join the industry, you must want to actually do the job, you have to have the right mindset. You need to be open to change and for your ideas to be challenged.”

Is there career progression within the industry?

“There are a lot of opportunities for career progression, and there are so many courses if you want to progress in your career.”

What do you love about working at Jervaulx?

No day is ever the same. I love working within respite and ‘Stepping Stones’, as we have a stream of new service users, and I love the new challenges and new faces they bring. The Stepping Stone service gives such a sense of achievement.”
