Donna is a dedicated Carer Manager who covers all aspects of supporting carers, from recruitment on their very first day, through training, compliance and coordinating rotas. She oversees holidays, carries out assessments and makes sure she really gets to know the carers she works with. Despite her management role, Donna still loves to go out and deliver care herself.
What does your typical day look like?
“My days are really busy, but I enjoy them so much that they fly by! I support carers from start to finish, making sure they’re trained, competent and confident before they go out. I protect both carers and clients, coordinate rotas, manage holidays and carry out assessments. It’s important for me to know each carer really well so I can support them properly. Even though I’m in management now, I still go out and deliver care as it’s something I’ll always love.”
How did you start your career in care?
“I first began by helping to clean an elderly person’s house, which gradually turned into caring for them. I also cared for my nana, who had dementia. That’s when I knew care was the right path for me. I started as a carer and over time, with the right support, I worked my way into management.”
What do you love about your job role?
“Honestly, everything. I’m a people pleaser and I’ve always been a caring person. I love supporting both clients and carers and seeing the difference it makes.”
What was your perception of the industry before you joined, and what is it now?
“When I first thought about care, I just assumed it was about helping older people. But once I started, I realised it’s so much more. It’s about supporting anyone who needs it, no matter their situation. That shift in perception has made me even more passionate about what I do.”
What would you say to others who are looking to join the industry?
“Just be yourself. If you’re a good listener, a problem solver and are willing to think outside the box, you’ll do well. Go on the journey with clients, support them in their independence and you’ll go home with the best feeling in the world, knowing you’ve done a good job.”
What are the tough sides to the job?
“At first, I found it challenging to have tough conversations, but over time I’ve realised how rewarding it is when things improve. It can be difficult when clients need to go into care homes because I want to see them remain independent for as long as possible. And of course, losing clients is always hard but I take comfort in knowing I supported them on their journey.”
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
“One of the most rewarding parts for me is supporting families. Often, they’ve taken on the role of full-time carer, which can be very difficult. When we step in, it allows them to simply be a daughter or son again. That and working as part of a team every single day, is what makes this role so special.”
Why Olam?
“I loved everything Olam stood for from the beginning. It’s such a relaxed, family-oriented environment.”
