Meet care coordinator Sasha Hayley Armstrong

Sasha, based in Loftus, is a care coordinator at BJP Home Support. She’s worked at BJP for 18 months but has worked in the care industry for 11 years in various roles.

What does your typical day look like?

“My days are usually very busy and hectic, no two days are the same, it’s very full on. Typically, I carry out assessments and risk assessments, medication updates, liaising with staff and social services, client’s families, keeping everyone in the loop and making sure everyone knows what they are doing.”

What did you do previously and why did you choose the care sector?

“I lost my mum at 14 and I helped with her care. I had my little girl and worked on the end of life wing, and then I moved on to clinical research. I still wanted more job satisfaction and then moved into the care industry. I prefer domiciliary care to keep people at home and to help people’s families.”

What do you love about your job role?

“Every day is a new challenge, it’s not always the same. I love receiving compliments from families about how satisfied they are with the levels of care for their loved ones and keeping them in the loop and facilitating the best possible care.

“People often don’t realise the whole family is affected when a family member requires care, and we have a lot of dementia clients, and often their family can’t get to grips with what to do as it’s all new to them. We always try and reassure the family, not just the client.

“One thing I love about BJP Home Support is that we get into the nitty gritty to get to know the client, it’s very personal and it has to be, to be able to give the best care.”

What was your perception of the industry before you joined it, and what’s your perception now?

“I find that the care industry is looked down on, I don’t think that will change for a long time. It’s one of the hardest jobs, and it’s full on, it’s all year round, seven days a week, it’s not 9-5, it’s 24/7. It’s emotional and that can take it out of you. Care is frowned upon, and it shouldn’t be, everyone at some point in their life is going to need care.”

What would you say to others that are looking to join the industry?

“Definitely get into it, if you’re caring then you’ve got it in you do it. It’s so rewarding, as well as emotional at times. At the end of the week if I’ve helped someone, I’ve felt satisfied and happy.

What are the tough sides to the job?

“Healthcare is constant, it doesn’t leave you, even if I’m not on call, I’ll message the team to check in with clients. We all have bonds with our clients and families, they really do become our family too.

What is one of your favourite moments?

“When I go out and do reviews and speak to clients and their families, and they are overjoyed with the support we’ve given. Often clients will say ‘I wouldn’t be at home if it wasn’t because of you’ we are big promoters to keep people at home, as long as it’s safe.”

Is there career progression in the sector?

“There’s so much career progression in the industry. Someday I would like to become deputy manager, and I know BJP would support me to do it, there are always opportunities and pathways.

“If you are someone that wants to get into the care industry, it’s so rewarding. If you’re passionate, please come along, because we need caring people to support our community.”

What do you enjoy most about working for BJP Home Support?

I enjoy working for BJP as everyday isn’t the same, I like the fast pace of the job role and enjoy my workload, some days are challenging but as a team at BJP we all help each other where we can. since I have been at BJP I feel like working with the people I work with I have learnt so much about my role and feel confident in my work and knowing I can turn to any of the team for guidance if I need it, I feel like BJP give great opportunity to people if they want to go further in their career, I look forward to coming to work even though I never know what the day ahead is going to be, I spend more time at work with my work colleague then I do at home and I do feel like BJP is one big family.
