Meet Care Assistant Michelle Rispon

57 year old Michelle Rispin from Loftus, made the career change into the care industry in March 2023 and has never looked back.

What did you do previously and why did you change your career?

“I previously worked in the education sector, and it changed so much over the years. I was fed up, I wasn’t enjoying my time at work and decided to change career paths.

“Speaking with a close friend, she said I should try the care industry and apply for a role at Caremark Redcar and Cleveland, a home care company. I didn’t know whether I wanted to go down that path at first, from working with young people to elderly people, I wasn’t sure whether it was for me. But I applied for a care support worker role and I’ve never looked back. I love it, it’s the best thing I ever did.”

What do you love about your job role?

“It’s just so amazing, it’s very satisfying and rewarding. In my previous career, I was constantly stressed and worked so many extra unpaid hours, but my new role as a care assistant is perfect. I have a fantastic work life balance and I’m respected so much by all, from the management team, colleagues and customers, Caremark Redcar and Cleveland is an amazing company to work for.”

What are the tough sides to the job?

“If I’m honest, I don’t find any sides to my role difficult or tough. I like to be busy all the time, so if a customer needs someone to just sit and talk to, it’s nice, but not something I’m used to. It can be heartbreaking if they’re upset or need a shoulder to cry on, but at the same time it’s lovely to be there for them and I hopefully cheer them up by the end of my visit.”

What was your perception of the industry before you joined it, and what’s your perception now?

“Before I joined it, I knew it was a hard role because my Mam worked in care, so I didn’t have a negative perception of the industry. But it is so much more than people think, it’s not just about changing beds and personal care, there’s so much more to it than that.”

What would you say to others that are looking to join the industry?

“Just do it. Give it a go, it is the most satisfying and rewarding job I’ve ever had. I was on antidepressants for seven years; I’m completely off them now. If I can do that, anyone can.

“You get to be involved in a customer’s everyday life, take them shopping, go for a day out. I recently took a customer to the beach pier, and we got fish and chips, which was something he had never done before, and it was wonderful to share that memory with him. It’s not a job, it’s a pleasure.”

What does your typical day look like?

“Typically, I start my day by being out at work for 7am. I do a few calls, get my customers ready for the day that includes showering, get ready, making breakfast, tidying, chatting, anything to make their life easier. I then will go home for a few hours, take my dog for a walk and carry out any house chores. I then go back out and get my customers ready for bedtime. I’ve got a great work/life balance, it suits my life perfectly. I adore the job!”

“Depending on the customer, I might work with someone else to visit a customer, but it doesn’t bother me working on my own, it’s the type of person I am, I get on with everyone.”
