Over the past year, 18 year old Abi Dicken, has been a Business Admin Apprentice at Meadowvale Homecare.
What did you do previously and why the career change?
“I went to Middlesbrough college, but I knew it wasn’t for me. My mum works for Meadowvale Homecare, and I spoke with the team about an apprenticeship. Ebony and Andrew of Meadowvale offered an apprenticeship, as college wasn’t for me. It was something different and I never expected that there was so much involved in the role within the care industry.”
What do you love about your job role?
“The people I get to meet, and the events. I love meeting the people that I speak to on the phone and see the difference in people that the events make.”
What are the tough sides to the job?
“Some days are hectic, somethings go wrong, when this happens, we get together and delegate tasks, it can be stressful, but we all enjoy our days.”
What was your perception of the industry before you joined it, and what’s your perception now?
“I didn’t realise how complicated it was, I didn’t know how much went into it, the process of new staff, and how difficult it is to communicate with doctors, social workers and pharmacies.
“It’s a great industry to work in, there’s always something to learn and so many opportunities with so much career progression, like registered manager Ebony, she worked her way up from a care worker and now is a registered manager.”
What would you say to others that are looking to join the industry?
“Be prepared for tough days, it’s not easy, but it is worth it and if you’re passionate you will enjoy it.”
Is there career progression in the sector?
“There is lots of career progression within the industry. This year, I’m going to do a degree in business, at Sheffield University.”
